Where does your time go?

“What have you been doing all day long?” that’s a question you’ve probably heard before. People ask it when something they think is important hasn’t been done. Spouses, parents, bosses. If you’re happy to be somebody else’s assistant, the question matters, but where time management really makes a difference, is where it helps or hinders you in your own aims. You have to make the most of your own time, otherwise it will just slip away and you’ll be dead before anything significant happens.

Right now, I know exactly where my time goes. I work long hours in order to recover from a 3 month break in income, courtesy of COVID 19, then I do everything else, eat and sleep. When you work, you work, but what about the time outside work. What if your priorities aren’t solely career related, or what if you’re self employed and have to manage every minute of your day, all by yourself?

It wasn’t until my thirties that I started working for other people. The majority of my first decade post graduation was spent self employed. I was a freelancer, with the emphasis on free. It was wonderful, and eventually it was very productive.

When I learned how to accurately measure and allocate my time usage, my life improved quite rapidly on all fronts.
