We Thought

You thought it was fair
You thought if we tried
You thought we’d get what we deserved
But everybody lied.

I thought I was clever
I thought I would win
I thought I knew the game
Playing did me in.

We thought there were rules
We thought there were prizes
We were wrong of course
And we got our surprises.

What are you thinking now?
We’re sitting with our sorrow
We’re still in this together
What will we think tomorrow?
