The importance of maintaining flexibility.
I have a confession to make; back in the 90’s I was a gym rat. Whilst my teenage contemporaries were playing Sega, getting high, partying, chasing girls, and getting in trouble with the law, I spent a lot of time lifting weights.
Being a loner with only a small circle of close friends, the gym suited me. We had a great time pushing each other through gut wrenching workouts then staggering home with limbs that felt like overcooked spaghetti. During summer holidays, my sister would come to the gym looking for me; sent by my father who thought I should be doing something better with my time.
But I wanted to exercise. I’ve always loved exercising, and having gotten fat, depressed and seriously out of shape in my 30’s, you can bet I was over the moon when gyms re-opened after months of lockdown. I went back in there with a vengeance, spurred on by the need to rehabilitate myself from two injuries and the hideous sight of my soft unconditioned reflection. The fact that results were evident from the first workout added fire to the fuel. Yesterday I completed 48 heavy sets of exercise in 47 minutes and felt like I’d been hit by a wrecking ball, it was glorious.
As the world becomes increasingly obsessed with outward appearance and a whole generation has been raised on Instagram and reality television, steroid abuse…
