In his book If you like exercise, chances are you’re doing it wrong, Gary Bannister details the genesis of a workout that produced unprecedented results for football players, military cadets at Westpoint, world champion bodybuilders, and normal men and women. The same workout still works just as well today, but is largely ignored.

The only team in NFL history to achieve a perfect, unbeaten season are the Miami Dolphins. That was in 1972, after their coach Don Shula, put the whole team on the Proper Strength Training programme.

In 1975, Footballers, wrestlers and volleyball players at the Westpoint Military Academy, were put through a programme of Proper Strength Training. Their results were compared with the results of cadets using traditional training methods. Proper Strength Training produced enormously superior improvements in cardiovascular health, strength and muscle gains and flexibility.

When Arnold Schwarzenegger was king of the bodybuilding world, he also tried Proper Strength Training. He was unable to complete the workout. Schwarzenegger left the gym and threw up on the grass, before flying back to California. In Gary…
