Something else worth knowing

Half of what I know is that
I don’t know much about,
Things I think I know too well
The other things I doubt.

Most of what I do is done
A thousand times already,
The first nine hundred and ninety nine
Attempts were not so steady.

Then I thought “I’ve got this now”
And during all the time,
I was practising that single thing
I left a lot behind.

The things I’d nearly figured out
The things I’d learned before,
I guess they never served me well
They’re no use any more.

Of greater use they might have been
The things that I’ve neglected,
If they’d brought me happiness
Beyond what I expected.

Or if by chance or lucky fluke
The first time I had tried,
Whatever that thing might have been
Attracted to my side.

Favour fame or maybe riches
Maybe interest,
From a woman who blew my mind
The blow is sometimes best.

I know at least there are some things
I seem to have done well,
A few things out of many more
That have all gone to hell.

Let me finish off this drink
And finish off this game,
Then I’ll draw myself a map
And head into the flames.

I know the map will turn to ash
But I’ll know where I am going,
Away from what I have already
To something else worth knowing.
