Numb and happy

Would the days be any brighter
If everyone was forced to smile,
If everybody’s reigns were tighter
We could try that for a while.

Would things be easier to do
If I had plans that I could hold,
And the grip to see things through
Instead of always being told.

If I recall with clearer eyes
Encouraged by what I retrieve,
Could I select only the lies
To feed the things I should believe.

If I could hold the shadows down
And pour them into my lacuna,
Would it be enough to drown
Would I be numb and happy sooner?

How long before the costume slips
From the faces made of stone,
Everyone is just as frightened
As they are when they’re alone.
