Neither of us

I don’t have to be surrounded
I can be my own best friend,
If I only have myself
Neither of us meets our end.

Neither of us leaves behind
Another who must still draw breath,
Once the best of us is gone
The living curse then wait for death.

I know I’m foolish and short sighted
I know I’m scared and I should try,
To meet another whilst I live
Then maybe I’ll be first to die.

So I show up I’m always present
That doesn’t mean that I’m included,
Maybe it’s your memory
That somehow still has me excluded.

Maybe I’m just not that good
Better to avoid the crowd,
Maybe I’m just holding on
Until we lie beneath the shroud.
