Weight loss over three days, from nearly 79 kilos, all the way down to 75 kilos. Photographs by the author.

Last month I published the article Rapid Weight Loss. That was a summary of what I’d learned from Professor Roy Walker’s Book ‘Life Without Diabetes. Four days ago I decided to try the diet from the book. So far, the results have been astonishing, and the diet has been easy.

To get myself started I took the most unflattering picture of myself I possibly could, from an angle that made my belly look about the size of a house. That was going to be my stick, something to beat myself up with whenever I was tempted to waver. The diet dictates a calories intake of less than around 700 calories a day. I eat about 2500 calories a day. So I thought it was going to be a hell of a battle.

Professor Walker’s diet was designed to see if he could reverse diabetes. It’s extremely simple. You replace all of your meals with meal replacement shakes, and in the evening you eat a salad for roughage, so you don’t get constipation. That meant no more of my favourite breakfasts, lunches, or suppers. And no snacks, treats, or high calorie drinks.

The average weight loss on Professor Walker’s diet, also known as the Newcastle diet, was 15kg over two months. 15kg! In two months! A lot of patients lost 3.5kg in the first week. I decided that I want to lose 10kg, within 2 months.
