Don’t lose sight of your fitness goals just because you’re injured

Regardless of how careful you are in the gym, you’ll probably have your training interrupted by injuries. You might even be training intelligently enough to avoid injuries in the gym; your form is good, you don’t use too much volume, or too much weight, and don’t train too frequently, but you can still get injured.

Injuries don’t only occur in the gym. I started working out thirty years ago, and I recently had to stop for a full three years due to adhesive capsulitis (often referred to as frozen shoulder) and coronavirus. Two days ago I tore a tendon in my ankle playing basketball, which is forcing another break from the gym. It’s disheartening; I’m one plate away from lifting the entire stack on leg press. I’ve never seen anyone in my gym do that, or even get close, and I was looking forward to the milestone. With this injury, I’ll have to take at least a month off.

Setbacks are inevitable, but failure is not. If you are determined to be as strong, fit and healthy as you can be, injuries don’t have to stop you. They will occur and they will slow you down. So what? Once you’re healed, you can get back to the gym and start working towards your goals again.

What’s the best thing to do when you get injured? See a doctor! Medics are not bodybuilders or fitness expert…
