How do I get back home?

I can’t please all the people
Any of the time,
I must figure out what sides there are
And see who is on mine.

I can’t cover all the bases
I only have two hands,
If I am joining everyone
I have nowhere to stand.

How do I get back home
When my masters are elsewhere?
I’m caught between opposing sides
They both want me there.

What can I say to save us
And keep me from the gallows?
If I had a ship to sail on
The sea would be too shallow.

And the shores are only shadows
The sun set long ago,
I wade towards an unknown fate
There is nowhere else to go.
