Heavily armed militia storms synagogue

Dozens of worshippers injured

It should have been a peaceful night, as hundred of Jews offered their prayers inside a UNESCO world Heritage Site Synagogue in the early hours yesterday. But the peace was shattered when a militia armed with guns and grenades stormed the holy site, throwing stun grenades and firing bullets at the worshippers. Dozens of the unarmed worshippers were injured, some are now in a critical condition. Victims included the elderly and infirm, as well as children.

As the attackers drove the terrified Jews out of the building, violence erupted in the streets, where the unarmed victims were met by more heavily armed gangs. Shocking images of the attacks captured on camera phones have been streamed around the world.

Initial reports suggest that the militias, who used water cannons filled with sewage as well as firearms, are being funded by extremist foreign regimens.

The attack left the synagogue in flames. A crowd of several thousand extremists, thought to have links to international far right groups groups, could be seen outside the synagogue dancing and cheering as it burned.
