It’s been 45 days since I decided to lose weight. I have no idea what I currently weigh other than knowing it is less than 75 kg. There is reason to believe that most of my lost weight must have been fat as I’m visibly more muscular than I was 45 days ago. This counters the idea that you cannot gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. That belief could be due to imprecise premises. Another common but more extreme belief is that any calorie deficit will cause you to lose muscle. Nonsense. I think that one was birthed by supplement sellers keen to keep the public buying as much protein powder as possible.

I may have not gained any muscle but still look more muscular by virtue of being less fat. Fat covers muscle, so leaner bodies generally look more muscular. A person with visible abdominals should not really be described as muscular, but as lean. There is a purpose to writing this besides pointing out the imprecision of ideas and vocabulary. I want to illustrate the idea that you shouldn’t just rely on one measure when you are monitoring weight loss.

It makes sense to start with a scale. But don’t stop there. I’ve lost fat without sacrificing muscle because I lift weights regularly, but not everybody lifts weights. Anybody who has spent an extended period lying in bed and eating less than usual will probably have lost a lot of muscle in the process. Regardless of who you are…
