Until I Win or Lose

Is this blind desperation
Or educated hope,
Does it make a difference
If it’s the only way to cope?

Is this laudable determination
Or laughable stupidity,
Am I incorrigibly foolish
Or is this wise tenacity?

Is this anything at all
Until I win or lose?
It’s only speculation
The outcome gives no clues.

Everybody here
Remains inglorious,
Everyone will be forgotten
Except for the victorious.

Countless die in misery
But they’re not worth a mention,
The one black swan amongst them
Gets all of the attention.

And everybody wants to be
The one anomaly,
Amidst all of the ruined men
We all refuse to see.

Am I sure of nothing
Or am I sure to win?
The only way to play it safe
Is never to begin.
